Chargers’ White Leads After 1st Round of Region IV Tournament

Carl Sandburg College freshman Trace White (Mount Pleasant, Iowa/Mount Pleasant) sits atop the leaderboard and the Chargers are in fourth place after Thursday’s opening round of the Region IV Division II Tournament at PrairieView.
Faced with extremely windy conditions, White shot a 3-over-par 75 and is a stroke ahead of Bryant & Stratton’s Caden Fletcher and two in front of Sauk Valley’s Colton Guy and Oakton’s Nzelu Maitha in the 54-hole tournament.
White’s round helped Sandburg to a 333 total, leaving the Chargers a shot back of third-place Highland and seven behind second-place Black Hawk in the nine-team event. Sauk Valley takes a four-shot lead into the second round after posting a 322 on Thursday.
The top two teams and top six individuals from teams outside the top two advance to the NJCAA Division II Championship to be played May 19-22 at Twin Hills Country Club in Joplin, Mo. Sandburg has sent an individual or team to nationals for seven straight seasons and in 11 of the last 12 years.
Chargers sophomore Grant Campbell (Earlville, Ill./Earlville) is tied for fifth overall after carding a 79 in the first round. Sandburg’s other scores for the round were an 82 from Grant Otting (Taylor Ridge, Ill./Rockridge) and a 97 from Cooper Beck (Petersburg, Ill./PORTA). Kevin Greene’s (El Paso, Ill./El Paso-Gridley) 99 didn’t count toward Sandburg’s total.
The tournament continues with the second round at 10 a.m. today. The final round tees off at 10 a.m. Saturday.
